LHP Dontrelle Willis left his start for Toledo after one inning Monday night with left forearm tightness. Willis has been making modifications to his delivery and the forearm tightness could be related to strain on new muscles. It was not believed to be serious. He gave up a run and two hits in his inning but didn't walk a batter and threw 15 pitches.

LHP Dontrelle Willis showed good control Friday in his start for Class AAA Toledo. Willis went six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. He walked only two and fanned five in his debut for the Mud Hens. Willis could return to the Tigers when rosters are expanded Sept. 1, but possibly not until Toledo's season is over.

LHP Dontrelle Willis was promoted to Triple-A Toledo and will pitch for the Mud Hens on Friday. He worked 7 1/3 innings Sunday, allowing four runs, two walks and six hits. He was 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA for the Flying Tigers but his control got better as time went along. "His arm strength is there and he's throwing strikes," Tigers' GM Dave Dombrowski said. "They've done a lot with him and he's worked very hard. He has a great sense of focus on the mound and is more serious out there." Willis walked only two in 13 2/3 innings during his last two starts but also gave up eight runs and 16 hits.

LHP Dontrelle Willis made a successful pitching appearance Thursday for the Class A Lakeland (Fla.) Flying Tigers, not walking a batter in three innings of work. Willis gave up four hits, a run and struck out one batter. He will remain at Lakeland to see if he can continue to throw strikes.

LHP Dontrelle Willis ended his stay in Detroit on Sunday with another bullpen session to work on smoothing out his delivery. "Sometimes if you work hard but you have bad habits, you're going to have problems," Willis said. "So you just have to break it down and tell yourself that you're not as good as you want to be and be honest with yourself and go from there." "The true test is when Dontrelle gets back down there pitching to hitters and seeing where he stands and seeing how his control is and seeing how his health is, his knee is," Manager Jim Leyland said. "Those are the issues that are most important. The results to me are throwing strikes in the strike zone, getting people out in the strike zone. That's the kind of progress I'm looking for." Willis returned to Detroit early in the week for a cortisone shot to his ailing right knee. He returns to high Class A Lakeland on Monday to continue working on his delivery.

LHP Dontrelle Willis underwent an MRI Monday afternoon at the Detroit Medical Center, and the test disclosed the pitcher has patella tendinitis in his right knee. Willis was given a cortisone injection to reduce inflammation and fitted for a brace to provide additional support. He will return to Lakeland, Fla., later this week to resume his training program. The 26-year-old, who signed a three-year, $29 million extension after being traded to Detroit during the winter, has pitched just once since agreeing to go to the minors to work on regaining his control. Willis is 0-1 with a 10.32 ERA in the big leagues this season.

LHP Dontrelle Willis was scheduled to pitch two relief innings Sunday night in a rehab appearance for high Class A Lakeland of the Florida State League. Willis had not pitched in a game since he was sent to Lakeland nearly three weeks ago in an effort to regain his ability to throw strikes. The Tigers are trying to smooth out his mechanics, lessen his movement, to help him gets his confidence back.

LHP Dontrelle Willis was optioned to high Class A Lakeland on Tuesday because "that's where our best support system is," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "With all the facilities there, it's where we can focus on this the best."
The stunning move was prompted by Willis' season-long struggles.
Willis (0-1) has walked 21 batters in 11 1/3 innings as a Tiger. On Monday night, he walked five and allowed eight runs on three hits.

LHP Dontrelle Willis is really fighting it now. Willis walked the first two batters he faced Monday night, then served up a cookie on a 3-1 pitch that went for a three-run home run. He gave up a walk and a home run as part of Cleveland's five-run second inning. Willis walked five in 1 1/3 innings and was charged with all eight runs. He throws a few pitches in the right spot but it's apparent the inability to throw strikes consistently is preying on his mind. "Dontrelle did not have a good night," manager Jim Leyland said. "He didn't throw strikes and when he eased up, he gave up two long balls. End of discussion."

LHP Dontrelle Willis starts Monday for Detroit and likely will be a fixture in the rotation the rest of the season unless he starts walking batters in bunches. So far Willis has kept his control problem under control by limiting hits, making bases on balls minimally damaging. He walked five in his first start back last week but only gave up two hits.
