DH Jim Thome had been silent the last few games after a hot second half, but he came through when it mattered most. That home run he was looking for finally came, Thome connecting on a 2-2 offering from Nick Blackburn and depositing it 461 feet away. "I haven't been doing much here the last two or three games, so it was nice to get a big hit," Thome said. "This is what it's all about, October baseball." It was also the sixth-longest home run hit by a Sox player at The Cell.

DH Jim Thome has been nursing a sore right leg, so Guillen opted to make Friday his rest day, starting Ken Griffey Jr. in the DH role, while Nick Swisher was in center field. The injury to Thome is nothing serious and Guillen thought he would be back in there on Saturday. "Thome needs a day off, mentally and physically," Guillen said. "But this is where we pick the right guy and the right time to have a day off. He'll be back in. We feel this was the right place for him to sit down."
