Alfonso Soriano - LF -
Chicago Cubs
OF Alfonso Soriano came off the disabled list July 23, the Cubs are 18-6, including Sunday's 9-2 victory over the Marlins, in which Soriano tied the score at 2-2 in the seventh with a two-run double, sparking an eight-run inning. Soriano spent six weeks on the DL with a broken left hand, suffered June 11. His return added life to a Cubs offense that was beginning to struggle at midseason.
"I thought when we were on the Houston-Arizona trip (right after the break), we were really starting to show the strains of no Soriano in our lineup," Lou said. "We needed to get Alfonso back in the lineup, and it came at the right time for us. It showed. He came back at the right time. It's so much easier just writing his name in the lineup in the 1-hole and working your lineup after 3 and 4 and then working the other pieces, as opposed to worrying who our leadoff hitter is."

Alfonso Soriano - LF -
Chicago Cubs
LF Alfonso Soriano didn't run out a long drive in the eighth inning of the Cubs' 10-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Apparently thinking the ball would go out, Soriano stood at home plate and watched it, ending up with a single off the wall instead of a double.
The next inning, Braves rookie pitcher Francisley Bueno threw a pitch at Soriano's head and got kicked out of the game. Soriano has admired some of his batted balls in the past, and Piniella wanted to stop it before it resulted in more problems. Apparently, he did so.
"I talked to Alfonso about it," Piniella said. "I told him that he's one of our leaders here, and there's no need for that. He agrees, and he says it won't happen again. It's over."
