LHP Andy Pettitte will get the start in the last game at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 21, the Yankees announced Friday. Pettitte, who has lost his last four starts, might have found his spot juggled in a different way if the Yankees were still in playoff contention, but with the increasing likelihood they will have no such concerns, the club can go with him for sentimental reasons.

LHP Andy Pettitte gave up one run on five hits in seven innings to give the Yankees a desperately needed win. Pettitte, who had not won in his past three starts, said the win offered him a bit of relief after the rough stretch, which coincided with the Yankees' swoon. "I'm extremely disappointed with the way I pitched and it was nice to throw a good game tonight," Pettitte told reporters.

LHP Andy Pettitte had his second straight rough start, yielding five runs on six hits in five innings. Pettitte fell to 12-9 on the season, and the Yankees can't allow much margin for error from him the rest of the way. With RHP Joba Chamberlain out for now and the rest of the rotation other than RHP Mike Mussina a patchwork job, the Yankees need Pettitte to step up.

LHP Andy Pettitte could be the key to the Yankees-Red Sox series this weekend. Former Yankees manager Joe Torre always valued the No. 2 starter in a short playoff series. In a three-game set, the No. 2 takes roughly the same pivotal role. With Pettitte pitching well lately, he will need to either pick up his team after a loss Friday or pick up steam heading into Sunday's series capper when the Yankees face Jon Lester.

LHP Andy Pettitte did a good job of backing up his challenge to teammates before the break with a strong game in his first start after it. Pettitte struck out nine and gave up just one run on four hits in eight innings in the Yankees' 2-1 win Sunday. Before the break, Pettitte had declared the Yankees stunk and needed to improve if they wanted to make the playoffs for a 14th straight season.

LHP Andy Pettitte challenged his teammates to play better after Sunday's 4-1 loss, if they want to reach the postseason. "If we want to make the playoffs, we have to be better," Pettitte told reporters. "We stink right now, for the most part. As a team, we've kind of stunk it up here lately, and we need to play better." Pettitte, who took the loss while the Yankees dropped three of four headed into the all-star break, seemed particularly perturbed by the club's lack of offense. "Their guy pretty much dominated us the whole day, and they were running me back out there awfully quick," Pettitte said of Toronto starter A.J. Burnett, who struck out eight in 8 1/3 innings. "Not a real good game by us."
