RHP Kelvim Escobar had surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his pitching shoulder Tuesday in New York and will fly back to California with the Angels on Sunday night. He is scheduled to meet with the Angels' medical staff there next week and map out a plan for his recovery.
Dr. David Altchek stabilized Escobar's labrum and repaired the tear. But "everything else was good -- he didn't have to touch my rotator cuff," Escobar said.
The prognosis is for a nine- to 12-month recovery, putting Escobar back on the field some time around the 2009 All-Star break. But Escobar is optimistic that his work ethic will allow him to shorten that recovery time.
"I think it can be less than a year," he said. "All the work I did before the surgery helped. We'll see."

RHP Kelvim Escobar will have season-ending shoulder surgery. The move seemed inevitable since Escobar's second attempt at rehabilitating a torn labrum without surgery ended in a fresh round of shoulder pain. Escobar was examined by the Angels' medical director, Dr. Lewis Yocum, and underwent an MRI that showed no significant change in the labrum despite Escobar having spent the past six months going through a strengthening and rehab program.
The surgery will be scheduled for some time before the end of July and will be performed by Altchek, who also performed rotator cuff surgery on Mets ace Pedro Martinez in 2006. The recovery period, Reagins said, is nine months to a year.
Escobar won a career-high 18 games for the Angels last season but was bothered by shoulder pain in the second half of the season.

RHP Kelvim Escobar (torn labrum) underwent an MRI on his right shoulder Wednesday, which showed no changes from this spring, manager Mike Scioscia said, and Escobar received a cortisone shot in the shoulder on Thursday. But when he tried playing catch before Friday's game, he stopped the throwing session after fewer than 10 throws because of pain in his shoulder. Escobar is once again considering season-ending surgery.

RHP Kelvim Escobar's recent progress in his return from a torn labrum proved too good to be true.
Escobar experienced renewed pain in his right shoulder after throwing 39 pitches in three innings of a minor league injury-rehabilitation start for Class A Rancho Cucamonga on Monday.
Escobar said he had difficulty getting loose in the bullpen before the start and "felt like I was pushing the ball -- that's not good." He pitched in the game anyway and regretted it when the pain in his shoulder returned.
"I woke up (Tuesday) and it was like, 'Wow, it's painful,'" Escobar said. "It's not the normal soreness you feel after you pitch -- it's pain. And it's in the same spot. This feels like it did in February, when it was really bad."
Escobar was scheduled to be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum and said he had also spoken with his agent about seeking a second opinion from Mets team doctor Dr. Steven Altchek, who performed rotator cuff surgery on Mets ace Pedro Martinez in 2006.
